Popovic pulls off masterclass with surprise selections in World Cup opener
Head coach of Australia’s national football team, Tony Popovic, faced major criticism in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup after making a massive call to drop veteran goalkeeper Maty Ryan for rookie shot-stopper Patrick Beach.
However, after securing their first win of the competition by beating Turkiye 2-0 on Saturday, which confirmed our World Cup predictions, those questions about Popovic’s selections feel like a distant memory, as Beach produced an unforgettable performance.
The 22-year-old, who plays for A-League outfit Melbourne City, repaid his coach’s faith in some style. From an early stop on a goal-bound effort to denying Turkiye from two dangerous free kicks, Beach produced a string of outstanding saves, showcasing his sharp reflexes and athleticism.
His best effort, though, came in the 55th minute, when he got down low to his right to deny Arda Guler from a free kick with his fourth save of the evening. By the final whistle, Beach had racked up an incredible eight saves - a record for an Australian goalkeeper at a World Cup.
The Dream Come True! Beach reflects on incredible performance against Turkiye
Following a display that belied his lack of experience at the highest level, Beach spoke to the media and revealed that the moment would remain etched in his memory for years to come. He said:
"It was amazing, this is a dream come true. This is all you think about as a kid, this is the pinnacle to play for your country on the world stage and to get a result in a close game, and against a great opposition, was one of the best nights. Seeing the whole crowd, all the yellow and green was going crazy - I was going crazy. It was an unbelievable moment, something we will remember for sure."
While there is still a long road ahead in this World Cup, for Beach and Australia, this victory could prove to be a significant stepping stone. With three points already secured, a draw against the United States on Friday or in their match against Paraguay could be enough to book their place in the Round of 32.
