Old Firm 2025: Brendan Rodgers Eyes Treble as Celtic Face Rangers at Ibrox
by Joseph King | by Joseph King

Treble dreams for Celtic fans
After wrapping up the Scottish Premiership last week with a dominant 5-0 away victory over Dundee United, Celtic are within touching distance of yet another historic treble. The Scottish League Cup is already in the bag, their seventh in the last nine seasons, following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Rangers in December.
All that’s left to conquer this season is the Scottish Cup, where Celtic will face Aberdeen in the final on May 24th. There, they’ll look to defend their crown and match their current League Cup run of seven titles in the last nine years. That highly-anticipated final, among many others, will be covered by our experts in football predictions as the season comes to a close.
Rodgers is seeking his third treble-winning season as Celtic manager.
Celtic famously had four treble-winning seasons in a row from 2016/17 to 2019/20, two of which came under the management of Brendan Rodgers before he departed for the Leicester City job in the beginning of 2019. With the current league season title added to his records, Rodgers has now moved up to third all-time in the rankings of Celtic managers with 11 trophies to his name. He is also currently the most decorated living manager in Celtic history.
Celtic’s devastating attacking numbers underline their dominance
The 1915/16 season remains Celtic's record for the most goals scored in a single league campaign at 116. Nearly 100 years on, the current squad have a chance to eclipse that number and write their names in the history books.
Currently, the Bhoys have notched 102 goals in 34 games. This has them averaging an even 3.00 goals scored per contest this season. To tie the record, they would need to score 14 more times in the final four games (3.50 per game on average).
The Hoops are currently on pace to match their highest scoring season ever in the Premiership era (2013 - present). The club’s highest goal tally during this time is Ange Postecoglou’s 2022/23 treble-winning team which saw Celtic score 114 goals.
Let’s take a look at Celtic’s top-scoring seasons below:
- 1915/16: 116 goals in 34 matches
- *2022/23: 114 goals in 38 matches
- 1937/38: 114 goals in 38 matches
- 1966/67: 111 goals in 34 matches (world record 196 goals across all competitions)
- *2016/17: 106 goals in 38 matches
- 2003/04: 105 goals in 38 games
- *2024/25: 102 goals in 34 games (ongoing)

The Old Firm: always competitive
The Ibrox will be the venue for the 446th Old Firm derby in history on Sunday. Rangers had a highly-successful run over their local rivals from 2019 to 2021, during which time they recorded an unbeaten 6-1-0 record against Celtic.
Since then, however, Celtic have held the clear upper hand. The league champions have won nine of their last 13 matchups, with only three of those ending in victory for Rangers. With that being said, the Gers have won the last two meetings between these two sides since their heartbreaking League Cup final loss in December, outscoring Celtic 6-2 during that time and setting the stage for Sunday’s showdown.
