For Newcastle United, this fixture carries far more weight than a regular matchup; it's historic. This is their second appearance in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. The last time they made it this far was in the 2002-03 season. It was a 16-team second group stage, meaning this is their first real knockout round of 16 in club history.
Reaching this stage wasn't all that plain and simple. Hansi Flick's men failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight league phase games, with FC Copenhagen, PSG, Newcastle, Club Brugge, Slavia Prague, Eintracht Frankfurt, Chelsea and Olympiacos finding the net, conceding 14 goals in the process. The last time they managed to keep a clean sheet was in the previous season, securing a 4-0 home victory against Dortmund in the quarter-final first leg.
The focus now turns to their match against Newcastle in the first leg of the Round of 16, and they will hope their defensive vulnerabilities don't get in the way of a positive result at St. James' Park. Barcelona has a star-studded squad that can overwhelm opponents in big games like this. The primary focus is on Lamine Yamal. He has been directly involved in seven goals for the club, scoring three and providing four assists. While it's not that much, the youngster has been in red-hot form leading up to this crucial encounter with six goal contributions in four games.
Marcus Rashford is another name that needs special attention. Rashford has made eight goal contributions in the UCL and was a starter in four of his last eight league phase games. His last goal came against FC Copenhagen. For a player who has been involved in 50% of Barcelona's goals in this competition, he can be a game-changer if introduced.
