Real Madrid produced a masterclass at the Santiago Bernabeu last week and enter the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester City with a comfortable 3-0 cushion. The Citizens are favoured to bite back tonight, but can they pull off a miracle comeback on their home patch?

History against Citizens ahead of UCL RO16 blockbuster

Real Madrid on their home patch in the UEFA Champions League is a different beast, and that was proven once again last week when they romped to a commanding 3-0 victory in the first leg and confirmed our Champions League predictions, thanks to a Federico Valverde masterclass.

Los Blancos’ skipper scored a stunning first-half hat-trick in front of a packed Bernabeu that night and followed up by getting on the scoresheet again in his side’s 4-1 drubbing of Elche over the weekend, which helped them remain within touching distance of Barcelona in La Liga.

As a result of the first-leg win, the 15-time UCL champions arrive at the Etihad Stadium in a very strong position, and while our experts have not written off the Citizens winning tonight’s match, according to our Manchester City vs Real Madrid prediction, overturning the deficit is a truly monumental ask.

Indeed, the stats do not make for pretty reading for City. First off, this marks the 36th time that Madrid have won the first leg of a European knockout tie by three goals, and they have never been knocked out of the competition after doing so in the previous 35 instances.

Next, Los Merengues have eliminated Man City from the Champions League four times in the last decade, including the last two seasons. Additionally, Pep Guardiola has not managed to progress in a UCL knockout round after his side lost the first leg in the last three such instances during his tenure in Manchester.

Following the defeat at the Bernabeu, Guardiola’s side’s chances of reeling in Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title (as well as the team’s morale) took a massive blow at the weekend, when they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by relegation candidates West Ham United at the London Stadium.

So, is there no hope for City tonight? Well… not entirely.  Guardiola has masterminded his fair share of stunning victories at the Etihad, and blue-blooded Mancunians will be hoping their side can reproduce what many consider their greatest team performance ever tonight.

Back on May 17, 2023, the Citizens went into the second leg of their UCL knockout tie with Los Galacticos level at 1-1 and delivered a near-perfect performance to beat the Kings of Europe 4-0 (5-1 on aggregate) at the Etihad. A statement result that humbled the continental giants.

Haaland vs. Mbappe: Battle of Europe’s premier marksmen

During Man City’s aforementioned victory here in 2023, Erling Haaland was at the peak of his powers, and while he did not get on the scoresheet that night, his imposing presence clearly rattled Madrid’s backline, and his movement allowed the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva space to exploit.

However, the Norwegian international has been far from his best in 2026 and was virtually a spectator in the first leg, as he did not record a single shot at goal, marking only the second time in his remarkable Champions League career that had happened and the first time in 38 games in the competition.

Still, writing off the City number nine may not be the wisest choice, as he has proven time and again that form is temporary, but class is permanent. Let’s not forget, Haaland has netted seven times in this season’s UCL and has 56 goals in just 57 appearances in the competition.

While City fans will be hoping their talisman can rediscover his touch tonight, there is one massive factor to consider at the opposite end of the pitch: Will the team’s backline be able to keep Kylian Mbappe at bay?

The Frenchman has been sidelined since February 21 with a knee injury, but Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed that he is “ready to play” tonight. He is the leading scorer in the tournament this season with 13 goals and has netted more times against City than any other opponent (7), including a stunning hat-trick last season.

Mbappe has already recorded the second-fastest hat-trick in the tournament’s history this season, which came against Olympiacos on Matchday 5 during the League Phase, and he is now just four goals shy of tying Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals in a single Champions League season.
