Rising Stars Set To Shine at WAFCON 2026

The 2026 WAFCON is set to bring Africa’s finest women’s national teams together in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, with the continental crown also providing a pathway to qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. 

The 14th edition of the tournament will be the biggest in history, with the field expanded to 16 teams. The likes of Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa are among the favourites to win the title, but there are also several rising stars looking to make their mark on the continental competition. 

Indeed, the expansion of WAFCON has opened the door for Member Associations to blood their finest youth products at the highest level, and the four teenagers below are ones we’ve picked out that could take the tournament by storm: 

  • Kautar Azraf (Morocco) - The 18-year-old local product currently refining her craft with FC Barcelona B, who serves as the host’s explosive attacking asset
  • Elizabeth Chenge (Tanzania) - The youngest player in the entire 2026 tournament, named to the senior lineup at just 15 years old
  • Kadiatou Diarra (Mali) - A 17-year-old dual-national standout, who chose to represent her homeland over France at the senior international level
  • Princess Marfo (Ghana) - The highly rated Right to Dream academy graduate, who secured a high-profile move to PSV Eindhoven ahead of the tournament

The marquee matchup of the opening night of the 2026 WAFCON sees the host nation and back-to-back finalists Morocco take on an unpredictable, highly motivated Kenya side under the lights and in front of a packed house in Rabat. 

As discussed in our Morocco W vs Kenya W prediction, the Atlas Lionesses must lay down an immediate statement of intent to banish the ghosts of previous final heartbreaks, losing to Banyana Banyana in 2022 and the Super Falcons in 2024. 

  • Morocco’s Mission: With the weight of home expectations on their shoulders, Morocco are likely to try and take control of the match from the outset and look to dominate possession. Their game plan is likely to centre on rapid, triangular combinations through the half-spaces, aiming to stretch Kenya’s defensive shape and isolate their opponent’s full-backs into one-on-one situations.
  • Kenya’s Counter-Attack: The Harambee Starlets are expected to embrace their role as underdogs and drop into a compact 5-4-1 defensive structure. From there, they will look to launch quick, direct balls over the top, targeting the space behind Morocco’s high defensive line

Morocco beat both Cape Verde (5-0) and Malawi (2-1) in their two warm-up matches and are now unbeaten in their last nine games (W6 D3). Their only previous encounter against the Harambee Starlets ended in a 5-1 victory in June last year.
