The final curtain of Matchday 29 in La Liga will fall at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Real Madrid will be taking on rivals Atletico Madrid in a derby that could prove pivotal in this season’s title race. Los Blancos enter the match four points off Barcelona at the summit, while Atleti are in fourth place.

Huge pressure on Arbeloa ahead of Madrid Derby debut

The La Liga title race could tilt tonight, as Real Madrid look to maintain pressure on Barcelona at the top of the standings. Los Blancos have a massive task at hand with their cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu eyeing a move up to third place in the standings.

Los Blancos will enter this match brimming with confidence, having just dispatched Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the Champions League Round of 16, either side of a routine 4-1 victory over Elche at this venue on MD28, confirming our La Liga predictions.

Aside from the title race, it’s going to be a huge occasion for Alvaro Arbeloa. Los Merengues’ manager has overseen his fair share of Madrid Derbies during his time with the club’s youth and reserve squads, but this is the first time he will do so with the senior side, and needless to say, the pressure is firmly on him.

Arbeloa’s tenure so far has not been smooth sailing, and most from a neutral perspective would likely agree that his record has been fairly average. Indeed, the side’s performances have improved in recent weeks, highlighted by their recent UCL triumph, but inconsistency has largely been the order of the day on big nights like this.

In the opposite dugout, this could be the last time we see Diego Simeone in a La Liga Madrid Derby. Numerous reports coming out of Spain in recent weeks have suggested that “El Cholo” is likely to bring an end to his incredible 14-year stint with Los Colchoneros at the end of this campaign.

If that is to be the case, Simeone will certainly want to leave his mark on his fixture before he departs. His side just eliminated Tottenham Hotspur from the UCL in midweek, but our experts' Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid prediction suggests that this will be a much tougher task for Los Indos on enemy territory.

Still, Los Rojiblancos have the edge in recent encounters against their arch-rivals, having beaten them 5-2 in the reverse fixture and knocked them out of the UCL last term. The last time Atleti lost a La Liga fixture against Los Blancos was September 2022, and you’d have to go back a year further for their last league defeat here at the Bernabeu.

Mbappe, Alvarez - The stars come out to play in Madrid Derby

Real Madrid received a major boost in the last week, with talisman Kylian Mbappe returning to action after almost a month on the sidelines due to injury. The Frenchman came off the bench in the second half against the Citizens in midweek and is expected to feature from the off tonight.

Mbappe is having an incredible season so far, netting 38 goals and providing six assists in 34 matches across all competitions, including seven goals in his last seven league matches. He has also netted two goals in his last four matches against Los Rojiblancos.

One major blow for Los Blancos is the likely absence of Thibaut Courtois, who was forced off in the second half in Manchester with an adductor issue. The Belgian was impressive before his withdrawal, producing four saves in the first half to keep his side in the tie under immense pressure from City.

For Atleti, Julian Alvarez is one to watch tonight. The Argentine’s form in La Liga has not been great in recent weeks, but he will be in high spirits coming into this fixture off the back of providing five goal contributions in the tie against Spurs. He also has four goals in six matches against Real for Atleti, including two here at the Bernabeu.

Other players who could have an impact tonight are Vinicius Junior, who has seven goals in his last nine appearances, while Alexander Sorloth has netted 11 goals in 2026, and was the only player to get on the scoresheet for Los Colchoneros in the Super Cup at the start of the year.
