This Sunday, the NRG Stadium will host the biggest match in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final as co-hosts USA take on Mexico. The regional bragging rights will be on the line as both nations aim to leave their mark on the biggest stage. Who will come out on top?

The defending champions, Mexico, who lifted the CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy in the 2023 edition, are out to defend their title. El Tri are on the cusp of history as they are one match away from clinching a record 10th title.

However, standing in their way is another decorated nation in this tournament, the United States, who have lifted the trophy on seven different occasions. It has to be pointed out that this is their 13th appearance in the finals proving they are regulars.

This is also more than just securing a second consecutive title for Mexico but it's a revenge match. Javier Aguirre's charges suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the United States in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, meaning they are out to exact revenge for that outcome.

USA and Mexico renew acquaintances

It's not a surprise that the United States and Mexico are set to clash in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Since the competition's introduction in 1991, these two nations have met each other seven times in the final, meaning this is the eighth meeting. For insights on this match, it's best you head on to our USA vs Mexico prediction.

Mexico holds the upper hand with five wins compared to the United States' two. It also has to be put out there that they are the most successful nation in this tournament, boasting nine titles. The United States comes in second with seven titles.

Mexico have emerged victorious in two of their last three finals in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The last time these two nations locked horns were back in 2021, which also marked their second consecutive meeting. The United States won that match 1-0 after extra-time courtesy of a Miles Robinson header in the 117th minute.

Road to the CONCACAF Gold Cup final

Mexico's VasquezThe United States was one of the two teams alongside Panama to conclude the group stages with a 100% record. Located in Group D, they finished at the summit with a five-point cushion over second-placed Saudi Arabia.

In the quarter-finals, they had a tough assignment in Costa Rica but managed to fight their way to victory after securing a 4-3 win on penalties. This comes after a nail-biting 2-2 draw in regular time.

Heading to the semi-finals, they saw off the threat of surprise package Guatemala securing a 2-1 win courtesy of Diego Luna's brace in the first 15 minutes.

Mexico, on the other hand, did not conclude the group internships on the highest note. However, they topped Group A and were level on points with second-placed Costa Rica.

Mexico have gone four games in the CONCACAF Gold Cup without conceding a goal.

In the quarter-finals, they beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 before holding on for a 1-0 victory in the semi-final against Honduras.

Potential game-changers

Cesar Montes (Mexico) has been an influential player for the Mexican senior national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup . At the heart of defense, the 28-year-old has not only shown his defensive capabilities but also his attacking threat. He has been a constant threat in the final third, scoring three goals, and is the team's leading goalscorer.

Matt Freese (USA) is the reason behind the United States being in the Concacaf Gold Cup final. He made three important saves in a penalty shootout against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals. The shot-stopper is expected to play another crucial role.

Raul Jimenez (Mexico) possesses lots of experience for the Mexican senior national team. At 34 years old, the striker has made 118 appearances with 42 goals scored during this period.
