Arteta’s Dilemma: Can Arsenal Win the Champions League?
Although pressure may be at an all-time high for Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta, his Gunners team will remain confident entering this matchup. They already lead the tie 1-0, and will just need to avoid losing in 90 minutes to reach the semi-finals again.

The betting odds rightfully favour the Gunners, and you can only expect the Premier League leaders to scale through at home.
The real question, from fans and critics alike, is whether Arsenal can lift the UCL title that has evaded them throughout history.
It’s too early to call it, but the Gunners might have their best shot ever in the 2025/26 UCL campaign. A win here means they face Atletico in the semis, and it’s the same Madrid team Arsenal trashed 4-0 in the league phase this season.
If they scale Sporting and beat Atletico in the semis, Arsenal will be on to just their second-ever Champions League final in history.
A Historic UCL Campaign for the Gunners
They’re just halfway through to the semis, but Arsenal are already having a Champions League season to remember. Here are the Gunners' record stats this season:
- Arsenal have conceded just five goals in 5 goals (the fewest) in 11 UCL games this season (six fewer than the team in second).
- The Gunners have kept a staggering 7 clean sheets in 11 games (the most).
- Arsenal have won 10 of their 11 UCL games (the most), only failing to beat Leverkusen on the road in their 1-1 stalemate.
Sporting CP: The Dark Horses from Portugal
You look at the names at this stage and think Sporting CP is the weakest team here, and you won’t be wrong. However, that reality shouldn't take away the pure danger Leões (Lions) pose to the Gunners.
Remember that Sporting CP finished in the top 8 of the UCL league phase, even beating reigning champions PSG (2-1).
And in the previous round (RO16), Sporting completed a miraculous 5-0 comeback, overturning Bodø/Glimt’s 3-0 first leg lead. They have, without a doubt, all the credentials to knock Arsenal off their game, just as Southampton and Bournemouth did in just the past two weeks.
