Lucky loser Greet Minnen will play unseeded Yulia Putintseva in the third round of the Miami Open. The winner will then play either Aryna Sabalenka or Anhelina Kalinina for a place in the quarterfinals. Yulia Putintseva has been in terrific form in recent weeks and will arrive fully confident of success here. The Kazakh defeated Liudmila Samsonova in three sets in the second round for her fifth win in the last six matches. She has now moved into the third round for the fourth time at this event. Putintseva’s best result in Miami was a fourth-round finish achieved in 2019. Before arriving here, the 29-year-old had recorded a fourth-round finish at Indian Wells. Putintseva, who has compiled a 12-8 record thus far, was a quarterfinalist in Hua Hin and Hobart. Advancing to this round has moved her up five places to 63rd in the live ranking.

Greet Minnen has also moved up the WTA world rankings. The 26-year-old has catapulted up nine places to 70th in the live ranking. This is the furthest she has advanced, not only in Miami but at a WTA 1000 tournament. This is her second main draw appearance here and in her debut two seasons ago, she was eliminated in the first round. Minnen, who lost her final qualifier, defeated Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets in the second round. This was her eighth win of a topsy-turvy campaign that has seen her lose 10 times. Minnen has alternated between the tour and challenger circuit. The highlight of her season came in the challengers as she was a semifinalist in Charleston. Minnen has struggled on tour level and is only now playing past the second round at a tour event.
