Tenth seed Daria Kasatkina and the unseeded Yulia Putintseva will meet next at the Madrid Open. They will battle in the fourth round with the winner playing Sara Bejlek or Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals. Yulia Putintseva has advanced to the fourth round in Madrid for the first time. In her previous six appearances, she had failed to go past the second round five times. The Kazakh has won her three rounds without dropping a set. She defeated Caroline Dolehide by the loss of four games to advance to this round. This was her 17th win in 28 matches this season with three coming on clay. The 29-year-old has had exciting campaigns at WTA 1000 events this season. She made the fourth round at Indian Wells and then the quarter-finals in Miami with both results being career bests. Advancing to this round has catapulted her six places in the live ranking to 44th.

Daria Kasatkina defeated Putintseva in their only encounter to date. This was back in 2018 on the grass courts in Wimbledon. She will hope to come out on top again and continue her impressive season. The Russian has compiled an 18-9 record and has played in three finals thus far. One of those finals came on clay in Charleston right before she arrived in Madrid. Kasatkina has won six of seven matches on clay and has equalled last season’s finish in Madrid. A win here will see her equal her best-ever result in this event, achieved six years ago. The world number 11 defeated compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in the previous round.
