Angelique Kerber is back at Wimbledon as a wildcard and will play unseeded Yulia Putintseva in the first round. The winner of this fourth career meeting between these two will play Katerina Siniakova or Marina Stakusic next.

Yulia Putintseva is having an amazing grasscourt campaign, which has yielded her first tour title in three years. The Kazakh made her season debut on grass in Birmingham and won all five matches to lift the title, her first on grass. She should therefore arrive for this match fully confident of making a winning start.

This has however never always been the case for her at SW19. Putintseva has won her first-round tie twice in her previous six appearances at Wimbledon. In the last two seasons, she has exited in the opening round. The 29-year-old starts her campaign at the All England Club as the WTA’s world number 35.

Angelique Kerber is back at Wimbledon after a year-long hiatus. The German missed the entirety of last season while on maternity leave. She has struggled on her return to the tour but will hope her success in this major continues.

Keber, who has compiled a 7-13 record and has lost her last four fixtures, is a former Wimbledon champion. She triumphed here in 2018 and not since 2011 has she lost a first-round fixture. In her last 10 appearances at Wimbledon, Kerber, a former world number one, has qualified for the second week of competing six times.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has struggled on grass and is yet to win on the surface. She was defeated in the first round in Berlin and Bad Homburg. The 36-year-old is ranked outside the WTA top 200 places.
