Unseeded Yannick Hanfmann faces qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in round one of the Chengdu Open hard court tournament. Here’s our match prediction.

Hanfmann is the world number 95 and playing his first singles tournament since the US Open where he lost in the first qualifying round. He did represent Germany in the Davis Cup last week and won both of his hard court matches.

That included a victory over world number 22 Alejandro Tabilo The German has been playing mainly on other surfaces since March and did reach a clay court semi-final in July.

On hard courts, the 32-year-old has only reached one last 16 in 2024. That was in Brisbane in January, and he only needed to win one match to get that far.

Shintaro Mochizuki is down at 147th in the latest rankings and had to qualify to get into this main draw. The Japanese player had a tough time in his two qualifying matches with both going to a final set.

He had to come from behind to get past Charles Chen in his first match. Two tie-breaks were played in his final qualifier against Li Tu. Mochizuki has struggled for results on the ATP Tour this year.

He did get through the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open and at Roland Garros but then lost in the first round. A win over Hanfmann will be his first win in the main draw of an ATP Tour event this year and only won three in 2023.
