World number 88 Yanina Wickmayer and world number 121 Katie Volynets will face off in the qualifying rounds in Miami next. The winner will then advance to the main draw of this WTA 1000 event. Yanina Wickmayer is back in Miami after a four-year hiatus. The former quarterfinalist here last participated in this tournament in 2019. She will hope to continue with her strong record of playing in the main draw. The Belgian has only once in her previous 11 appearances here failed to make the main draw. Wickmayer defeated crowd favourite Alycia Parks in straight sets in the first round. This was her first win of the season and ended a 7-0 start to the year. The 34-year-old is a former world number 12.

Katie Volynets has returned to Miami for a second successive season. She will hope this is the year she finally makes it to the main draw. The American was defeated in the first round of qualifying last season in her debut here. Volynets has had a tremendous first quarter of the season and has so far won 15 of 21 matches. Alternating between the tour and challenger circuits, Volynets has earned all her wins on hard courts. She finished as runner-up in the Canberra and Mumbai Challengers and made the quarterfinals in Hua Hin. Before arriving in Florida, Volynets produced a third-round finish at Indian Wells. This is her best-ever result at a WTA 1000 event. One of her wins in Coachella was a 2-0 success over world number six Ons Jabeur. The 22-year-old defeated Renata Zarazua in three sets in the first round. She has now moved up seven places to 114th in the live ranking.
