Diana Shnaider, the 15th seed at the 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Tennis tournament, will play unseeded Wang Xiyu next. This second career meeting between them will be in the second round. Follow on for a preview of the match and a prediction.

Xiyu Wang defeated Shnaider last year on hard court in Guangzhou in their only meeting so far. Though she has struggled this year, the Chinese player will be hopeful this slight advantage sees her prolong her stay in Paris.

Wang began her Olympic debut with a straight sets win over Linda Noskova. This was only her second victory in the last six matches, improving her record to 20-19. The 23-year-old has now moved two places to 52nd in the live ranking.

Diana Shnaider will not be worried about Wang’s head-to-head advantage. The Russian has been in excellent form leading up to her Olympic debut. The 20-year-old arrived in Paris on the back of title success in Budapest.

This momentum powered her to a straight-sets win over Elisabetta Cocciarretto in the first round here. Shnaider, on her best-ever tour campaign, has won her last six matches and the last five have come in straights.

Despite claiming her 37th win of the year, Shnaider has dropped one place to 24th in the live ranking. So far this year, she has won four titles, three at tour level. For the last month, Shnaider lost just one of her 14 last fixtures. The winner from this match plays one of Jelena Ostapenko, Camila Osorio, Laura Pigossi or Dayana Yastremska.
