Wessel Nijman and Michael van Gerwen will face off in the first round of the 2025 European Darts Championship on Thursday evening. The winner of this match between Nijman and Mighty Mike will meet either Stephen Bunting or Chris Dobey in the second round. Let’s get into the match prediction.
Wessel Nijman is one of three players who will be making their European Darts Championship debut this year, and he comes into the tournament carrying the number 14 seed.
The Dutchman has done well since returning from suspension, and while he has not won a major title this year, he did reach the semi-finals of the Dutch Darts Championship and European Darts Open.
Nijman suffered a third-round elimination to Jermaine Wattimena at the German Darts Championship last week but still has a positive record of seven wins and three defeats in his last 10 matches.
Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen won this competition four times in a row between 2014 and 2017. Last year, he only reached the second round before bowing out to Gary Anderson.
This year has been a tough one for MVG, given his lofty standards, but he has notched up two titles, winning the German Grand Prix and World Series of Darts Finals, where he beat Luke Littler.
However, Van Gerwen suffered back-to-back first-round eliminations in the last two tournaments he has entered, and has split his last 10 matches, five wins and five defeats.
