Stage 6 of La Vuelta is officially a mountain stage but the big climb comes in the first half of the day. There is a trio of Category 3 climbs in the second half of the stage, including the finish in Yunquera.

The last 3km are an average of 5.1% so it is not the toughest climb to consider for our prediction. It suggests that this is more of a puncheurs stage than anything else so form in the spring classics looks the way to go.

We start with Mauri Vansevenant who was 4th in the Amstel Gold and then 6th in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He was a respectable 51st on Stage 4, losing a touch over five minutes to race leader Primož Roglič. That leaves him far enough back for the GC men not to worry if he attacks.

This is the last year that Guillaume Martin is under contract at Cofidis. He won the King of the Mountains jersey in the 2020 Vuelta and showed up well in the classics earlier in the year. This looks like it could be a stage profile that he will enjoy.

Stage 4 saw Marc Soler finish well down the pack. It was hard to tell given his lack of tv time if that was because he struggled or was keeping his powder dry for a day to attack later in La Vuelta. He won stages in 2020 and 2022 in Spain, producing five top eight stage finishes in 2023.

Wout Van Aert might not be adverse to having a go here. He has to stay in touch over the Category 1 climb earlier in the day but if he can, there are few who can get up a short climb as quickly as him or live with his finish.
