Alexander Zverev’s defence of his Rome Masters title pits him against qualifier Vilius Gaubas in the third round. It is the first meeting between the two, and the winner faces Arthur Fils or Stefanos Tsitsipas next. Read on for our prediction of the match.

Gaubas is making his debut at the Rome Masters and is already turning heads. He is one of the shock names gracing the third round, and he will be eyeing the biggest upset in Rome.

He comes into this match off the back of wins over Damir Dzumhur and Denis Shapovalov. Those and two wins in the qualifiers mean that on his debut at this event, the Lithuanian has already posted four wins.

Zverev comes into this match with pressure easing after Jannik Sinner’s return to action. He did well in his first match, beating Camillo Ugo Carabelli in straight sets.

Now he will target a deep run, and his third-round opponent is beatable. The German is unbeaten against players ranking outside the top-100 since last season and hasn’t lost to such a player at the Masters level for about five years.

He will hope this record isn’t broken in his next game. Zverev hasn’t lost a third-round match this season, winning seven times, and has a 22-8 record coming here.
