Victoria Azarenka will meet Greet Minnen in the second round of the 2024 Canadian Open, a match scheduled for Thursday. Seeded 12th Azarenka will be the favorite and here’s our preview and prediction for the clash.
Azarenka made a strong start to her 11th appearance in the Rogers Cup, winning 2-0 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She lost just four games against the 12-time tour champion, showcasing the superb form she has been in this year.
The former world number one has compiled a 27-12 record this year, registering 17 of her wins on hard courts. Azarenka is a three-time semi-finalist at the Canadian Open. Last year, she produced a quarter-final finish. Moving to this round has seen Azarenka rise up one place to 18th in the live ranking.
Greet Minnen also won her first-round tie in straight sets, defeating Sloane Stephens by the loss of four games. The qualifier has now won 19 matches this year but still remains on a losing record after suffering 22 defeats so far.
Minnen, who is making her Canadian Open debut, has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits. She has lost 13 times at tour level and only twice has she won multiple matches at the top level.
Winning in the opening round has moved the Belgian up two places and into 72nd in the live ranking. Minnen, who started her campaign in Toronto in the qualifying rounds, has won three straight matches. The winner of this first career meeting between these two will play one of Madison Keys, Peyton Stearns or Anna Blinkova in the third round.
