One of the quarterfinals of the WTA Italian Open will have 11th seeded Veronika Kudermetova and 22nd seed Qinwen Zheng clash on Tuesday. Kudermetova has been in good form lately though she hasn’t necessarily sparkled, winning 17 and losing 10 of 27 matches. Seven of her wins have come on clay where she’s had the most success, even reaching the semifinals in Madrid before arriving in Rome. She has carried that momentum to her fifth appearance in this WTA 1000 tournament and has already set a personal record by reaching the last eight. Before this season, Kudermetova had never advanced past the third round here. Her win over Marie Bouzkova in the fourth round has moved her up one place to 11th in the live ranking.

Qinwen Zheng is on her debut appearance in Rome. Winning her three matches has seen her move to 18th in the live ranking, which is a new career high for her. The Chinese number one has however not been dominant this season and has just for the third time won three matches in a row. She will feel this is the perfect time to extend that run as she has the head to head advantage against Kudermetova. Zheng beat her Russian opponent in the semifinals in Tokyo last season to reach her first tour-level final. Five of Zheng’s 16 wins have come on clay, a surface she has gradually felt comfortable on in recent seasons. The winner of this second-ever meeting between the two faces 12th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or 30th seed Anhelina Kalinina in the semis.
