The fourth matchday of 18 in the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign sees fourth-place Uruguay hosting second-place Brazil in Montevideo. The expanded format means that six of the 10 teams in this region will automatically qualify while seventh-place enters into a playoff. Two-time world champions Uruguay will be expected to qualify for their fifth consecutive World Cup after exiting Qatar 2022 in the group stages. They’ve had a decent start to the campaign with a win, a draw and a loss in their first four games. The most recent outing for La Celeste resulted in a back-and-forth 2-2 away draw with Colombia. Uruguay looked to be heading towards their second defeat before a Darwin Nuñez penalty in the 90th minute evened up the score. The result means that former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has improved his record to 3-1-1 since taking over the team in May.

Brazil have experienced a mixed start to the qualifying group by their lofty standards. Things started off smoothly with a dominant 5-1 home win over Bolivia before having to grind out a 1-0 away win against Peru. They looked to be heading towards maintaining their 100% winning record before an 85th minute strike leveled the score at 1-1 in their match against Venezuela. The game would finish in a stalemate as the Brazilians wasted an opportunity on their home soil. Fernando Diniz’s men will now be hoping for a bounce back but will face a tricky opponent in Uruguay. The Seleção Canarinha have been somewhat wasteful in recent matches as their advanced statistics show a team that should have more goals.
