Ugo Blanchet is having quite the debut at Flushing Meadows. The Frenchman, who made his major debut at Roland Garros, has fought against the odds to earn his first Slam victories.

He defeated Fabian Marozsan in the first round in four sets and then outlasted 16th seed Jakub Mensik to advance to this round. Against Mensik, Blanchet clawed his way from a set down to win a five-set thriller that lasted four hours and 28 minutes.

He is now on a five-match winning streak and has shot up 41 places to 143rd in the live ranking.

Machac is on course to equal his fourth-round finish from last year and defend 200 points. The Czech player has been in terrific form at Flushing Meadows, where he is making a third appearance, and has won both of his matches without dropping a set.

Machac surrendered just five games in his opener against Luca Nardi. After a shaky first set that needed a tiebreaker, Machac composed himself against Joao Fonseca, winning 6-2, 6-3 in the final two sets. Winner of this year’s championship in Acapulco, Machac is 23rd in the live ranking.
