Unseeded Pedro Martinez faces qualifier Ugo Blanchet in round two of the Hamburg Open. For the winner, there's a quarter-final match against either fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo or wild card Maximilian Marterer.
Martinez caused a surprise in the first round when beating the sixth seed Matteo Arnaldi. The Spaniard won the first set on a tie-break but then only lost one game in the second. That's taken him up to 48th in the live rankings.
It was a good win for Martinez who has reached two clay court finals this year, one on the main tour in Estoril. He also made it to the last eight in Bucharest and seems to be back in that kind of form again this week in Hamburg.
Ugo Blanchet was ranked 161st in the latest ranking list, six places below his career-high. He's now up to a new best of 143rd after reaching round two in Hamburg. He had to win two qualifying matches to make it into the main draw.
Those were both won in straight sets, including a final qualifying round win over second seed Francesco Comasara. That took him into round one where he beat Alexei Popyrin, He lost the first set, needed a tie-break to level the scores and won the final set for the loss of two games.
