Tour de France - Stage 4 Predictions & Betting tips - Tour de France

 by Matthew Newman |

Stage 4 of the Tour de France will see riders travel 174km from Amiens to Rouen. There is little of note until the final third of the stage when there is punchy climb after punchy climb. That is the most important thing to note ahead of making a prediction.

Mathieu van der Poel outsprinted Tadej Pogacar into Boulogne on Stage 2, and this is another punchy profile late in the day. This is a tougher overall stage than that one, but van der Poel has to be the favourite to retain his yellow jersey for another day.

Without a doubt, both Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, who filled out the Stage 2 podium, are the biggest dangers to van der Poel, especially given that the climbs are a little bit tougher than on that second day.

It is a fascinating end to the day with a downward slope before an unranked climb to the line, so riders need to be fearless on the downhill as well. That means that Julian Alaphilippe needs serious consideration. He was fifth on Stage 2, and as a rider who has long been an outstanding descender, he could take the necessary risks ahead of the final climb.

Tour de France - Stage 4 - Tour de France prediction key points

  1. 174km with five categorised climbs in the final 50km is a profile for the puncheurs.
  2. Stage 2 was a puncheurs stage and was won by Mathieu van der Poel.
  3. Van der Poel came out ahead of Tadej Pogacar in two of their three meetings in the spring, as well as in Stage 2.
  4. With a time trial coming in Stage 5, this becomes doubly important for van der Poel to hold onto his yellow jersey for one more day.

Our Tour de France - Stage 4 - Tour de France prediction

This is an absolutely fascinating profile. With so little happening in the early stages, it's likely that a breakaway group with some half-decent climbers will steal away and that could be a danger for the main contenders, so expect the big teams to be keeping a very careful eye on the gap.

Mathieu van der Poel won the second stage, and this punchy profile is going to suit him perfectly. He has the sprint in the legs to outpoint the stronger climbers and can pick up another win, this time in the yellow jersey. Our Tour de France Stage 4 prediction is Mathieu van der Poel to win.

Mathieu van der Poel to win
