The opening stage of the 2025 Tour de France is 185km, starting and ending in Lille. It is a relatively flat stage, which should give the sprinters the win to kick off the event. Read on for our Tour de France Stage 1 prediction.
Binian Girmay won the green jersey in last year's tour. The Eritrean rider made history as the first African rider to land a Tour de France jersey, taking three stage wins in the process. 2025 has not been kind to him so far, yet to land a race.
The 2023 green jersey winner was Jasper Philipsen, finishing runner-up in both 2022 and 2024. He won nine stages across those three years and was successful in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne back in early March. His form has been spotty since, but this will be the big target of 2025.
Tim Merlier is the other top-ranked sprinter here for Soudal Quick-Step. It was 2021 when he won his sole Tour de France stage, not competing here since. He won two of the five stages of the recent Belgian tour, so he arrives in great form.
A final leading contender is Jonathan Milan. This is his first Tour de France, but in two Giros he has four stage wins and eight runner-up efforts. He missed the Giro this year after reports of discontent within the team, so he will arrive with a chip on his shoulder.

The first stage of the 2025 Tour de France is a fascinating one. It is a stage for the sprinters, so expect any breakaways to be swallowed up by a marauding peloton, all looking to put their sprinter in the perfect position at the line.
Although Jasper Philipsen only has a single win so far this year, this is going to be his main target. He is sure to have got himself in perfect shape for another tilt at the sprinter's jersey and can take out the opening stage at a bigger price than expected.
