Top seed Taylor Fritz begins his Atlanta Open campaign on Thursday with a second-round fixture against the unseeded Wu Yibing. The winner here will book a quarterfinal showdown with either world number 439 Kei Nishikori or the qualifier Juncheng Shang. Taylor Fritz’s best-ever finish in Atlanta came in 2019 when he made it to the final. He will hope to go one better and become the first top seed since 2018 to triumph in this competition. Fritz hasn’t played a tennis match in three weeks with his last being a five-setter in the second round at Wimbledon. Having done well on hard court, he will be confident of starting well here. Fritz has managed 34 victories in 2023 with 18 of those coming on hard court. On the surface he has also won his only tour title of the season thus far. Fritz is currently ranked ninth in the ATP.

Wu Yibing won the first-ever encounter with Fritz earlier this season on his way to winning the Dallas Open. He came from behind to win that semifinal fixture and will hope for the same resilience to prolong his stay here. Yibing made a winning start to his Atlanta Open debut, defeating Corentin Moutet in straight sets in the first round. This ended a four-match losing run to close out his grass court campaign. Since winning in Dallas, Yibing has struggled, winning only seven of the 18 matches he has played since then. His record for the season is 17 wins and 14 losses. On hard court, he has won the same number of matches, four, as he has lost. His first-round win has lifted him up two places to 87th in the live ranking.
