Thirteenth seed Jasmine Paolini begins her Indian Wells campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Tatjana Maria. Paolini, who has compiled a 9-5 record thus far, defeated Maria in Melbourne to tie this series at 2-2. She won in straight sets in the second round and went on to record her best-ever result (fourth round) at the major. Paolini made the third round in each of her first two appearances at this event. Winning in Dubai moved her up to 14th place in the WTA rankings, equaling a career-high.
