Sunderland are seven points from safety but with their poor goal difference it's really eight. The loss to Liverpool on Wednesday was their fifth successive league defeat and their Premier League future is looking rather bleak at present. Looking at their future fixture list and in particular those due to be played in February (Man C, Man U, Liverpool and West Ham) then January is a really vital month for them. Manager Sam Allardyce will be on the phone most of the month trying to get new players in to rescue his sinking team. If they don't beat Villa here then it might all be a bit of a waste of time.Aston Villa had been showing a bit of promise in recent weeks with three draws in four games but then they went and lost at Norwich on Monday. That leaves them still without a league win since the opening day of the season and going into this game they are four points behind Sunderland and 11 points from safety, virtually 12 because of their terrible goal difference. Draws aren't going to get Villa out of trouble and January is going to be a vital month for them. They need to make some positive signings before the transfer window closes and somehow start winning matches. An away win at Sunderland would be a great start but can anyone have enough trust in them to back them to win an away game?  Neither side are scoring that many so a bet on under 2.5 goals in the game looks a good one.
