Sturm Graz’s title defence is on course, as they currently sit at the league summit. Christian Ilzer’s men face a tough task if they are to solidify their top place as they are currently on a blip.

The Austrian champions have only won one of their last five games in all competitions which came last weekend against BW Linz. Their lead has also come about having played two more games than their rivals Salzburg in the league.

The poor run of form extended to the Champions League on Wednesday when they lost 1-0 to Belgian champions Club Brugge. High scores have been part of their game with the recent loss bringing an end to eight games which had over 2.5 goals scored.

Under Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant at Liverpool, Salzburg have not had the best of starts to the season. Salzburg who last season saw their run of 10 straight league titles come to an end are third, three points behind Sturm Graz.

Their troubles were compounded in a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the hands of French side Brest in the Champions League on Tuesday. The defeat left Salzburg without a point in their opening two games as they stare at the possibility of an early exit.

In the league, Salzburg have also been a pale shadow of themselves winning just four of their opening six games. Last time out in the league, the visitors put an end to their two-game winless streak by beating Austria Vienna 2-0.
