Mzansi Magic meets Palancas Power on Monday in Marrakech, where South Africa and Angola will lock horns in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Bafana Bafana and the Black Sable Antelopes are drawn in Group B, alongside Egypt and Zimbabwe. Check out our match prediction below!
This match marks the fifth time these two teams will meet at the AFCON finals, with South Africa holding an unbeaten record of two wins and two draws. The Rainbow Nation has won the continental title once, back in 1996, and finished third in the most recent edition held in the Ivory Coast in 2023 (2024).
While the Red Devils have not beaten this opponent in this competition, they did come out on top when they met earlier this year, beating the Green and Gold 3-0 in the COSAFA Cup final. Angola have never won an AFCON title, but many believe that their current squad has the potential to make a deep run in this year’s tournament. Let’s get into the key stats!

South Africa - Angola: Form Analysis
South Africa had an excellent AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign, finishing top of their group and unbeaten (W4 D2). They scored 16 goals - the joint second-most in the qualifiers - while only conceding five.
Thereafter, Bafana Bafana booked their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by again topping their group in the CAF Qualifiers despite having their victory over Lesotho reversed for fielding an ineligible player.
Hugo Broos’s side defeated Zambia 3-1 in November and Ghana B 1-0 last week in their AFCON warm-up games and are now unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions.
South Africa have kept four clean sheets in their last six matches!
Meanwhile, Angola were one of the biggest surprise packages in the Ivory Coast, where they surged into the quarter-final, topping their group, which featured the likes of Algeria and Burkina Faso.
Palancas Negras followed up on that effort by winning their qualification group for this edition of the competition with four wins and two draws. They scored seven goals and conceded only twice.
Since the departure of Pedro Soares Goncalves, Patrice Beaumelle has taken charge of four matches for Angola. The Frenchman’s tenure began with a goalless draw against Cameroon and a loss to Argentina before back-to-back wins over Zambia and Mozambique.

South Africa & Angola Squad Analysis
Despite the recent rift between Broos and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the Chicago Fire-bound defender remains a key figure in Bafana’s backline and will be the heart of the team’s defence along with skipper Ronwen Williams.
South Africa’s midfield will be missing the services of veteran Temba Zwane, who was left out of the squad, meaning Thalente Mbatha and Teboho Mokoena are expected to operate in the engine room.
Burnley’s Lyle Foster is likely to lead the line, but Broos will have to make big calls elsewhere in attack, with Sipho Mbule, Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appolis all gunning for a start.
Can Gelson Dala reproduce the form he showed at AFCON 2023?
The Al-Wakrah centre-forward finished second to Emilio Nsue in the Golden Boot standings in the Ivory Coast with four goals and netted the opener in the victory over Mozambique last week.
With Gilberto, Capita and Depu omitted from the squad, Mabululu will have to play a massive role in Beaumelle’s attack. The Al Ahli Tripoli attacker has already scored in the CAF Champions League this season and has nine goals in 34 appearances for the nation.
In defence, Lyon centre-back Clinton Mata will be tasked with keeping Bafana’s attack at bay. He will be assisted by a familiar face to South African fans in goalkeeper Hugo Marques, who formerly played for Cape Town City in the Betway Premiership.

Our South Africa vs Angola Prediction
Angola have made huge strides forward over the last few years, reaching the quarter-final at AFCON 2023 and securing their fifth COSAFA Cup title this year. However, they have largely relied on outscoring opponents to win matches, having only kept one clean sheet since their COSAFA Cup triumph.
South Africa, on the other hand, arrive in Morocco as the dark horse for the title. Barring the COSAFA Cup and CHAN competitions, which featured completely different squads from this one, their last defeat with their senior team was against Nigeria at AFCON 2023. We fancy Bafana Bafana to get the result here, but will err on the side of caution as our primary wager. Our South Africa vs Angola prediction is South Africa draw no bet.
