14th seed Ugo Humbert bids to reach the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals for the first time in his career. To do so he has to get past lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego. For the winner, their opponent in the last eight of this outdoor clay court tournament will be either eighth seed Casper Ruud or tenth seeded Hubert Hurkacz. Humbert had never won a match in this Masters 1000 tournament before this year in four attempts. This year has gone incredibly well for him though and he's 15th in the live rankings. Beating Sonego will take him up to a career-high 13th. He's ninth in the Live ATP Race and has won two titles this year, both on hard courts. His first win in Monte Carlo finally came when he beat qualifer Federico Coria in round one. He had to come from a set down to win that match. Round two was a lot smoother with a straight sets win over Zhizhen Zhang with only five games lost. Humbert is 2-2 in previous meetings with Sonego but he's lost both their matches on clay and that includes a match here last year. That went to a final set after he won the first.

Lorenzo Sonego wasn't expecting to be in the third round at Monte Carlo this year. That's because he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets in the final qualifying round. He'd already had trouble in his first match and had to go to three sets to get past David Goffin. Due to withdrawals, Sonego was reinstated as a lucky loser when Carlos Alcaraz pulled out. That saw him go into the second round and he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. He's up to 51st in the live rankings and now attempts to get into his second quarterfinal in Monte Carlo five years after his only other appearance. We go for this match to go to three sets.
