Top seed Jannik Sinner is going strong in his US Open title defence and will next take on 27th seed Denis Shapovalov. They will battle in the third round to mark their second matchup at a major. Read on to find our prediction for this match.

Jannik Sinner has looked incredibly sharp in his title defence and hasn’t lost more than seven games in his two duels. After dominating Vit Kopriva in the first set, Sinner had another dominating display against Alexei Popyrin to advance to this round.

He has now won nine consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows since last year and lost just two sets. The world number one has compiled a 33-4 record and won titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Denis Shapovalov has a head-to-head advantage over Sinner. He won their only other encounter in five sets at the Australian Open. This, however, was four seasons ago, when Shapovalov looked the most likely to become world number one between the two.

Now he is the underdog here. The Canadian, a former US Open quarter-finalist, defeated the wildcard Valentin Royer in four well-fought sets in the last round.

Advancing to this round has seen Shapovalov, this year’s Dallas and Los Cabos champion, jump to 26th in the live ranking.
