Shintaro Mochizuki, who is making his US Open debut, booked this slot after he defeated Hugo Gaston in straight sets in the first round. After winning his first-ever match at a major in his run to the second round at Wimbledon, Mochizuki seeks to make more personal history. 

The Japanese athlete has shot up 10 places in the live ranking to 102nd in the world. Competing largely in the challenger circuit, Shintaro has only once won a second-round tie at a tour event. This was in his run to the semi-finals in Tokyo two years ago.

Alex de Minaur also won his first-round tie in straight sets. The world number eight, who is defending 400 points, defeated Chris O’Connell by the loss of 11 games.

He has now improved to 38-15 after securing his 12th win in his last 15 outings. De Minaur, who made the US Open quarter-finals last season, has made it to week two in each of his last two appearances here.
