Scotland will wrap up their 2024 Autumn Nations Series on Sunday evening when they play host to Australia at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. The Bravehearts are currently in sixth place in the world rankings, while the Wallabies are eighth. Let’s get into the match prediction.

The last two matches between these two proud rugby nations have been nail-biters, with the most recent being decided by just a single point while the previous one ended in a two-point margin. Scotland have been the more successful in this contest recently with three wins in the last four, but the Aussies won the last encounter in 2022.

Bookmakers have inserted the hosts as the favourites in this match, but the visitors have arguably been the most impressive team during these year-end internationals. Can the Wallabies upset the odds in front of a packed Murrayfield or will the Scots end the year on a high? Let’s get into the key stats and try to find out.

Scotland - Australia: Form Analysis

Scotland will look back at the 2024 season as a largely disappointing one. Apart from their Calcutta Cup triumph at the start of the year, there is very little to suggest that they have made up ground on the top five nations.

The only tier one team Scotland have faced since March was South Africa a couple of weeks ago, and they lost the game 32-15 - albeit they were competitive for the majority of the match.

Scotland’s last six international Test victories were against tier-two nations!

Meanwhile, Australia seem to be turning things around after a very difficult couple of years, a period during which they bowed out of the World Cup in the group stage for the first time ever.

In September, the Wallabies had a dismal Rugby Championship where they were handed the Wooden Spoon and suffered a record-breaking loss to Argentina in their final game of the competition.

However, something seems to have clicked for the men from Down Under this month, as they enter this match following back-to-back wins over England (42-37) and Wales (52-20).

Given their wins in the last two games, the visitors now have a chance at winning a historic Grand Slam, which will be a major momentum boost heading into the British and Irish Lions tour early next year.

Scotland & Australia Squad Analysis

Gregor Townsend has recalled his big hitters for this match, fielding an almost identical side to the one that faced the Springboks a couple of weeks ago.

Pierre Schoeman and Zander Fagerson will start in the front row either side of Ewan Ashman at hooker, while Grant Gilchrist will provide the power from the second row.

In the backfield, Blair Kinghorn will start at fullback, flanked by Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe, while Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu make up the midfield pairing.

Scott Cummings will resume duty in the Scotland second row having served his suspension!

Joe Schmidt has handed a debut to Harry Potter for this match, and he will form the back three alongside Tom Wright at 15 and Andrew Kellaway on the opposite wing.

Samu Kerevi is suspended for this trip to Murrayfield and is replaced by Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, who joins the dynamic Len Ikitau in midfield behind halves pair Noah Lolesio and Jake Gordon.

The Wallabies’ front row remains unchanged from last week, but there is one alteration in the second row with Jeremy Williams coming in for Nick Frost at lock.

Our Scotland vs Australia Prediction

Few had given Australia much of a chance to deliver winning results this month, but they have proved their sceptics wrong, beating England in a thrilling match at Twickenham before thumping a struggling Wales last week.

However, Scotland presents a very different type of challenge, as they are likely to keep the ball in hand much more than the Red Rose and Dragons, and that could be a telling factor against this young Wallabies’ defence. Our Scotland vs Australia prediction: Scotland wins!
