Sara Sorribes Tormo, the defending champion in Cleveland, will begin her Tennis in the Land campaign against fellow unseeded opponent Wang Yafan. Read on for a preview of the match and our prediction.
Sara Sorribes Tormo will hope returning to a tournament she did so well in last year will help her turn her season around.
The Spaniard has had a disappointing 2024 campaign and so far has lost 20 of the 31 matches she has contested. Currently, on a two-match skid, Sorribes Tormo has managed just one win in her last nine outings.
Her last singles match was three weeks ago in the first round of the Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old, who has won twice in three matchups with Yafan, starts a new week ranked 73rd in the WTA world rankings.
Wang Yafan won the last time she squared off with Sorribes Tormo. This was four years ago on a hard court in Shenzhen. As she is having a better year than the Spaniard, she will be confident of making a winning start here.
Yafan has compiled a shaky 20-19 record though she registered 17 of her wins on hard courts. The 30-year-old, who has featured mostly in the tour, was a semi-finalist in Hua Hin and also made the third round in Melbourne.
Currently ranked 78th in the WTA, Yafan is coming off a first-round exit in Cincinnati as a qualifier. The winner in this first round encounter will advance to play Moyuka Uchijima or Peyton Stearns next.
