World number 54 Anna Schmiedlova and world number 95 Sara Errani will square off in the first round at the French Open. The winner will then play Emma Navarro or Zeynep Sonmez in the second round. Sara Errani is back for the 14th time at the French Open. The Italian is a former finalist here, achieving the feat in 2012. She has however not made it through to the second week of competing since a run to the quarters in 2015. In fact, she has not progressed past the second round since then. The 37-year-old began this year’s campaign in the qualifying rounds where she won all three of her matches in straight sets. She has compiled a 20-12 record switching between the tour and challenger circuits. The highlight of her season came in Bogota where she produced a semi-final finish. Errani, who is down to 98th in the live ranking, defeated Schmiedlova on clay the first time they met. This was in 2015 in the final in Rio.

Anna Schmiedlova responded to that loss in Rio by winning the Bucharest final against Errani five months later. She also won their most recent encounter two seasons ago in the ITF circuit. The Slovak will therefore arrive for this latest meeting confident of success. Schmiedlova is defending 240 points won in her run to the fourth round last year. This was her best result at Roland Garros and came in her 10th appearance. The 29-year-old is coming off a title run at the Parma Challenger. She defeated Mayar Sherif in the final in three sets to earn her first title of the season. Schmiedlova has compiled an 18-11 record and has won seven of 10 matches on clay. Despite her success in Parma, Schmiedlova has dropped a massive 20 places in the live ranking to 74th. This is after she lost 230 ranking points.
