Beginner's Guide - how does the Champions Cup work?

The 2026-27 Champions Cup features 24 clubs drawn into 4 pools of 6 teams each. Teams are seeded into two tiers based on their league finishing position, with the winners of each domestic competition (Northampton Saints, Toulouse and Leinster) and the defending Champions Cup winners, Bordeaux Bègles, seeded in the top tier, and the remaining twenty teams in the second tier. Each pool contains two clubs from each of the three leagues.

Clubs play 4 matches in the group phase, each against a different opponent: two home matches and two away matches. Clubs in the same league can't play against each other, which is why a club doesn't play every other team in its group.

The bonus point system has changed for this season, now broadly mirroring the structure used in the Top 14. 4 points are awarded for a win, 2 for a draw, and 0 for a defeat. 1 bonus point is awarded for scoring 3 tries more than your opponent, and 1 losing bonus point is awarded for a defeat by fewer than 8 points.

If two or more clubs in the same pool are tied on points, they will be decided as follows:

1. Best points differential
2. Number of tries scored
3. Fewer players suspended
4. Random draw

In a significant change to the qualification format, only the top 3 highest-ranked clubs in each pool now automatically qualify for the Round of 16, down from the top 4 previously. The remaining four Round of 16 places go to the four best-performing teams across all four pools based on total points, regardless of which pool they finished in. This means a team finishing 4th in a strong pool could still qualify ahead of a 3rd-placed side from a weaker one. Any team that misses out on the Champions Cup Round of 16 this way drops into the Round of 16 of the second-tier EPCR Challenge Cup instead.
