In the last eight, the winner will take on either Lorenzo Musetti or Luca Van Assche, both unseeded.
Hijikata had to win two qualifying matches to reach this main draw. on his debut in this tournament. He did that without losing a set. Round one saw him beat Luciano Darderi for the loss of only four games, before his three-set victory over Djokovic.
Etcheverry won their only previous meeting played on a hard court last year, winning in straight sets.
He is the world number world number 31, 52 places above Hijikata. Etcheverry has won two of his four indoor hard court matches played this year. Like his opponent, this is the first time in 2026 that he has made it past the second round of an indoor hard court tournament.
Wins have come this week in three sets against Andrey Rublev (with two tie-breaks played) and then he defeated eighth seed Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
