Qinwen Zheng has matched her US Open best by reaching the quarter-finals, where the qualifier will be up against second seed Elena Rybakina. This match will mark the sixth career meeting between the two. While Zheng has been superb, our prediction here backs Rybakina to claim a fifth win in this matchup.

Zheng has gone on a giant-slaying mission at Flushing Meadows. In her last round, the Chinese athlete overcame former champion and eighth seed Iga Swiatek.

She did it in straight sets, despite that being her seventh game here. The 23-year-old’s last two defeats at the US Open were inflicted by the world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, and she will be hoping to advance past the player closest to Sabalenka in rank.

Rybakina has lost once before against Zheng and will try not to be complacent here. Her tournament so far has been swift, and she comes here having spent nine hours fewer than Zheng on the court.

The Kazakh is targeting a third Grand Slam title but a first US Open, and, surprisingly, this is only her first time in the last eight here. She powered her way through a straight-set win over former champion Naomi Osaka and hasn’t dropped a set here.

Having tasted Grand Slam glory at the Australian Open this season, Rybakina will be confident of scaling further at Flushing Meadows. She holds a 5-5 record at quarter-finals this season but has been superb on hardcourts.
