European champions PSG are looking to successfully defend their Champions League title. Their journey towards that starts this Wednesday, with a home match against Italian side Atalanta at Parc des Princes. While Atalanta starts this match as outright underdogs, their experience, having earlier won the Europa League, can’t be overlooked. Bookies’ predictions have the French giants winning this, but let’s look at the match overview below.
PSG weren’t at their best in the league stage last season, finishing 15th and going into the playoffs. However, they rose from that and literally blew teams away in their title run. PSG are aiming to emulate Real Madrid, the last team to win back-to-back Champions League titles. That was between 2016 and 2018. This marks the 14th season in the Champions League for PSG.
While they’ll want to have another deep run in the competition, the Parisians’ hopes would be to replicate last season’s run. They have drawn three and won eight of their last 13 opening matches in the main draw of the competition.
That aligns well with their favorites’ status in this game. The French giants have already tasted European glory this season in beating Tottenham to the UEFA Super Cup, raising the expectations for the season.
PSG are coming off four straight wins to start their domestic season.
Atalanta have had a rather slow start to the season, with new manager Ivan Juric clearly struggling to settle in. The manager by now knows well the pressures in the position, and his first Champions League game as manager is a baptism by fire.
After back-to-back 1-1 draws with Parma and Pisa, the Italians managed a win on Sunday, beating Lecce 4-1. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in their opening three matches, and that’s already an indicator that this will be a tough one for them.
On a more positive outlook, they scored in all their three season-opening matches. Atalanta suffered a serious heartbreak in their only meeting with PSG; they conceded twice in stoppage time, losing 2-1 in the quarters back in 2020.

Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos are the only members of the current PSG who started in their 2020 meeting with Atalanta. Away fans will remember Marquinhos very well.
