Peru will be hoping to claim their first win of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers when they play host to Venezuela on Wednesday. The hosts are currently at the foot of the table, while the visitors are in fourth place. Peru are a long way from the form they showed in this competition in the previous edition of qualifying. They finished fifth then but come into this match with just one point earned in their first five matches of the current campaign. That came in a stalemate against Paraguay back in week one. Since then, the white-and-reds have been beaten by Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. However, the most concerning part for the hosts will be that they have not scored a single goal in this competition to date. Nevertheless, Los Incas have won their last three against this opponent, which earns them the favourites tag by most bookmakers. 

In contrast, Venezuela have been much improved since their last qualification campaign, where they finished in last place. The Wine-Red’s are currently in fourth place with a tally of eight points in their five games so far. They held the dangerous Ecuador to a 0-0 draw last weekend, extending their record to four games unbeaten. During that time, they also beat Paraguay and Chile while taking a valuable point against Brazil. Venezuela’s major strength so far has come from their defensive solidity. They have only conceded two goals in this competition and have kept three clean sheets in their last four games. We can expect the visitors to prioritize another shutout in this one.
