Paula Badosa makes her return to the WTA tour and will begin her 2024 campaign in Adelaide against lucky loser Bernarda Pera. The two will battle in the first round with the winner going on to battle second seed Jessica Pegula for a quarterfinal berth. Paula Badosa makes her long-awaited return to the tour after a six-month injury layoff. The Spaniard was last on the court in July at Wimbledon. She endured an injury-riddled campaign in 2023 and only played 27 matches. She will be hoping to make a strong return and her strong showing here last season will have her confident of this. Badosa was a semifinalist here in 2023 in what was her second appearance. The time spent on the sidelines saw her tumble out of the top 50 and is now ranked 74th in the live ranking.

Bernarda Pera has started 2024 with the same inconsistent form that plagued her last season. She has lost two of the three matches she has so far played with one of those defeats coming in Adelaide. The American was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Katerina Siniakova in straight sets. Her first defeat of the season came in this very round in Brisbane. Pera finished last season with a losing record and lost 23 of the 40 matches she played. It was the third time in the previous four seasons that she had lost more in a season. Pera isn’t a strong performer on hard courts and has a losing record on the surface in her career. She is currently ranked 69th in the WTA.
