Nuno Borges will compete in Auckland this week as the eighth seed and begins his tournament against unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The winner of their first career meeting will play second seed Casper Ruud in the second round. Read on for our match prediction.
Nuno Borges has returned to this event for the third consecutive season. The world number 46 earned his best-ever finish here last season when he battled his way to the semi-finals.
He will be looking for, at the very least, equaling that feat and building on a decent start to the year. Borges started his season in Hong Kong, where he finished in the quarter-finals.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry also made his season debut in Hong Kong. He had a shorter tournament, however, as he was eliminated in the second round by eventual finalist Lorenzo Musetti.
The Argentine isn’t a strong hard-court performer and has lost more matches than he has won on such surfaces. He, however, had one of his best seasons on hard courts last year, finishing with a 10-10 record.
Battling against a top 10 player in Musetti and losing in three sets will also have the 26-year-old fancying his chances of a winning start here. Martin Etcheverry starts this week ranked 61st in the ATP.
