Nuno Borges is making his Tokyo debut and will be hoping to maintain his winning start. The Portuguese number one saw off the challenge of the wildcard Yosuke Watanuki in the first round.

He won in three sets after letting the first set slip. Borges has struggled with his form this year, and before arriving in Tokyo, was on a three-match losing streak. Advancing to this round has seen the 28-year-old improve to 28-28 and move up to 50th in the live ranking.

Taylor Fritz also needed three sets to get past his first-round opponent. Arriving in Tokyo following a stellar performance at the Laver Cup, Fritz fought from a set down to get the better of Gabriel Diallo.

Currently on a three-match winning run, the American has improved to 46-17 with 27 of his wins coming on hard courts. This form should have him confident of ending up as champion for the second time in this event.

The world number five, who is competing in Tokyo for a seventh time, was crowned champion in 2022. Fritz defeated Borges in their only encounter last season.
