Third seed Daniil Medvedev continues his bid to reach a second successive Grand Slam final. He's up against unseeded Nuno Borges in round four of the Australian Open. Next for the winner is a quarter final against either ninth seed Hurbert Hurkacz or wild card Arthur Cazaux. Medvedev has reached the final of this tournament on two previous occasions, most recently in 2022. Last year ended with him getting to the title decider at the US Open. The Russian is the world number three and winning his first Australian Open title can see him return to the top of the rankings. In this tournament so far, Medvedev has twice lost the first set and had to go to five to defeat Emil Ruusuvouri in round two. He lost the first two sets in that match. It was smoother progress in round three as he defeated 27th seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime for the loss of only ten games.
Nuno Borges was ranked down at 69th at the commencement of this Australian Open. His run to the last 16 has taken him up to 47th and that's easily beaten his previous career high of 63rd. This is the first time the Portuguese player has gone past round one in this tournament. His previous best in any Grand Slam is a second round at the US Open and Roland Garros. The first two tournaments he played this year saw him fail to get past the second round. It's gone a lot better in Melbourne though with two straight sets wins over unseeded players before beating 13th seed Grigor Dimitrov in four after losing the first one. We tip Medvedev to win this match in straight sets.
