This Nations League group isn’t going to be completed on Wednesday. Northern Ireland host Romania but their opponents game against Norway at the weekend was postponed due to Covid. Northern Ireland are in deep trouble in this group with just one point from their five games. That was earned away in Romania where they drew 1-1. They trail third placed Romania by three points so there’s still a chance they could avoid relegation to League C. To do that, they would have to win this match and then see Romania lose that rearranged match against Norway. Northern Ireland took on Austria away on Sunday and it looked as if they might get a vital win. They scored in the 75th minute but then conceded two late goals to make it four losses in five group games. That capped off a disappointing week for the Irish after they lost to Slovakia in their European Championship play-off final. Their last four games have now all been lost and over 90 minutes play have gone eight games and 13 months without a win. Home form used to be strong but they have gone five without a win.

Romania would have loved it if Northern Ireland had held on to that lead in Austria. The Austrian comeback means that Romania can’t win this group but as mentioned could yet be relegated. Their four games in this group have produced one win, a draw and two defeats. Their only victory came when winning at group leaders Austria. They failed to build on getting four points from their first two games. Since that win in Austria, Romania have lost 4-0 in Norway (Haaland scoring a hat-trick) and 1-0 at home to the Austrians. Last Wednesday saw them beat Belarus at home. They led that game 5-0 after 55 minutes but ended up winning 5-3. That was only their second win in nine matches. Away from home, three of the last four have been lost with 13 goals scored. A bet on both teams scoring is the suggested wager.
