Nikola Bartunkova is unseeded in Hertogenbosch this week and begins her tournament against the qualifier Hanne Vandewinkel. This marks their first career meeting, and the winner will play Barbora Krejcikova or Renata Zarazua next. Vandewinkel’s first-round record isn’t great, and our prediction here won’t favor her.

Bartunkova is making her Hertogenbosch debut and arrives in strong form. The Czech youngster made her grass career debut last week in Birmingham and had an excellent run.

She finished as runner-up, winning four of five fixtures and losing to Alexandra Eala in three sets in the final. The 20-year-old has had a strong year alternating between the tour and challenger circuits.

Currently up to 61st in the live ranking, Bartunkova has produced a third-round finish in Melbourne and a fourth-round finish in Rome.

Vandewinkel lost the last three first-round fixtures she contested. Playing mostly in the lower divisions, she hasn’t been able to win more than one main draw fixture when on tour.

However, after a strong qualifying campaign, she will fancy her chances of upsetting Bartunkova. Vandewinkel, who is also debuting in Hertogenbosch, won both of her qualifiers without losing a set.

The two wins have seen her improve to a 28-13 record as well as nudge her back to the WTA top 100 at number 97.
