Two in-form teams face off with the New York Rangers hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. The Rangers come into this matchup on a two-game winning streak following their 2-1 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. The result brings New York’s seasonal record to 31 wins, 16 losses and three overtime defeats, placing them top of the Metropolitan division with a total of 65 points. They lead the second-place Hurricanes by four points and the third-placed Flyers by nine points. This will be the Blueshirts second consecutive game on their home ice where they have a 16-7-0 record. This comes out to an average of 1.39 points earned per outing at MSG compared to a 1.22 average points won per away trip (15-9-3 record). New York ranks ninth in the NHL in terms of defense where they are giving up an average of 2.82 goals per game.
The Lightning have been excellent on home ice this season but have really struggled to produce the same results on the road. Their 17-5-3 record at the Amalie Arena is one of the best in the NHL, giving them an average of 1.48 points earned per home appearance. Tampa Bay was red-hot prior to the All-Star game break as they won their last three in a row and eight of their last nine overall. They did the majority of their damage in Tampa with six of the aforementioned eight victories coming on home ice. The blistering run of form has the 2020, 2021 back-to-back Stanley Cup champions surging up the Atlantic standings, where they now sit third on 59 points. This is the first time that the Lightning take to the ice since the All-Star break and will be hoping their hot form can carry over.
