Uchijima is coming off a straight-set win over Xinyu Wang and looks to give this a deep run, having struggled this season. The Japanese enters this round on a losing run, having compiled a 24-28 record.

Her debut at Wuhan last year ended in the first round, and she will be looking to go deeper after bettering that. However, this season, the early stages have troubled her. In the second round, she’s progressed twice in eight events. She comes here placed 81st in the live rank.

Gauff was a semi-finalist in Wuhan last year, so the targets are higher this time. To achieve that, she must improve on her recent form. The American is coming off a semi-final defeat in Beijing.
