Wildcard Robin Montgomery will square off with world number 43 Marie Bouzkova in the Washington Open quarter-finals. Here’s our preview of the match and our prediction.
Robin Montgomery received a walkover from fourth seed Ons Jabeur in the last round. She will hope to have done enough to prepare with the ample time Jabeur’s withdrawal has given her. The American, playing in the main draw in Washington for the first time, defeated Shelby Rogers in the first round.
She won in straight sets against her compatriot who is placed outside the WTA top 350 places. The 19-year-old has alternated between the tour and challenger levels, and compiled a strong 30-14 record. Now ranked 107th in the live ranking, Montgomery is seeking to qualify for the semis at tour level for the first time.
Marie Bouzkova is having an inconsistent year. While she claimed a runner-up finish in Bogota she’s had her lows, and comes here having compiled a shaky 16-14 record. The Czech player has especially in recent outings struggled to win matches.
In her last eight fixtures, she lost four times. Despite this unconvincing stretch, the 26-year-old will be confident of a win here as she is the more experienced player. Making her debut in Washington, Bouzkova defeated Taylor Townsend in the last round in straight sets.
This win moved her two places and into 41st spot in the live ranking. The winner of this first career meeting between these two will take on Aryna Sabalenka or Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals.
