Eighth seeded Jordan Thompson will be glad to be back playing on grass. The world number 37 takes on unseeded Milos Raonic in the first round of the Libema Open in the Netherlands. For the winner, there's a match in the last 16 against unseeded Roberto Bautista Agut or qualifier Marc-Andrea Husler. Thompson reached the last eight of the US clay court championships but failed to build on that. At Roland Garros, he exited in round one and only won five games in his loss to Maximilian Marterer. Earlier in the year he won the Los Cabos hard court tournament and now begins his 2024 grass court campaign. The Australian has twice been the losing finalist in this grass court tournament in 2019 and 2023. Last year he led Tallon Griekspoor by a set but lost the next two. He also won the Surbiton Challenger Tour event in 2022 and will be a lot more comfortable back on this surface.

Milos Raonic faces Thompson in this tournament for the second successive year. In 2023 it was the Australian who beat him 7-6 6-1. Their only other previous meeting was on the hard courts of Miami when Raonic won in straight sets. Raonic is 197th in the latest rankings but was as high as third eight years ago. He got into the main draw of this tournament via his protected ranking. Now aged 33, Raonic is playing only his fourth tournament of the year. He missed the clay court season, last playing at Indian Wells in March. He continues to have injury problems and has retired from two matches this year and withdrawn from another. In 2016 he reached the Wimbledon final but hasn't reached a grass court title decider since 2018. We tip Jordan Thompson to win this match.
